CLEANBLUE: Rethinking Lubrication for a Cleaner Future

The CLEANLUBE project is transforming the way industrial lubrication is approached by developing greener, safer solutions for bottling lines and conveyor belts. Traditional lubricants often contain substances that are harmful to both humans and the environment. CLEANLUBE sets out to replace these with high-performance alternatives that align with modern sustainability goals.

Moving Away from Harmful Compounds

Current lubricant formulations commonly include fatty amines, silicone oils, and mineral oils. These compounds are not only poorly biodegradable but also pose health risks when there is long-term exposure.

CLEANLUBE aims to eliminate these substances by developing a new range of "no amine" detergents. This next-generation product line is designed to be free of all traces of fatty amines while maintaining or even improving performance.

Combining Science and Innovation

CLEANLUBE is built on strong scientific collaboration. Academic subcontractors are finalising a simulation model to better understand how surfactants interact with glass surfaces, a key material in bottling lines. This simulation enables more accurate predictions and better product development.

In parallel, ongoing tribometry testing is being used to continuously screen and improve lubricant formulations. This allows the team to assess friction and wear characteristics in real-time, ensuring the most efficient and effective solutions are selected for further development.

Integrating Life Cycle Thinking

One of the standout features of CLEANLUBE is its commitment to life cycle thinking. A comprehensive life cycle assessment (LCA) model is under construction to compare the environmental impact of legacy formulations against the new green alternatives. This analysis will offer valuable insights into sustainability gains and help guide future product development with measurable impact.

Supporting Circular Innovation in Industry

By reducing environmental risks and removing toxic ingredients, CLEANLUBE supports the principles of the circular economy. The new formulations will enable better waste handling, reduce chemical pollution, and support reuse or safer disposal options. For industries that rely on bottling and conveyor systems, this shift represents not only an environmental improvement but also a strategic business advantage.

Enabling Sustainable Growth for SMEs

For small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), adopting sustainable technologies can be a challenge. CLEANLUBE offers a ready-made, scientifically validated solution that helps these businesses stay ahead of regulations while contributing to environmental protection. It's a prime example of how R&D efforts can be scaled for practical use without compromising on performance.

Looking Ahead

CLEANLUBE's progress demonstrates that it's possible to combine high-performance industrial solutions with environmental responsibility. By replacing harmful components with biodegradable, safer alternatives, the project is helping to redefine what industrial lubricants can be. This innovation paves the way for cleaner production lines and healthier working environments, all while contributing to broader sustainability goals.

For companies seeking to align their operations with the demands of a circular economy, CLEANLUBE represents a powerful step forward, a way to clean up more than just conveyor belts.
