BIOSUPHYOL: Replacing "Forever Chemicals" with Safer Alternatives

The BIOSUPHYOL project is tackling one of today’s most pressing environmental, health and regulatory challenges: finding safe, high-performance alternatives to PFAS. Often called “forever chemicals”, PFAS have been used for decades because of their water- and grease-repellent properties and can be found in numerous everyday products. The problem? They are extremely persistent in the environment and can pose a serious risk to human health and ecosystems.

The BIOSUPHYOL project is offering a new path forward by developing bio-based, non-toxic solutions that meet the same technical demands without the long-term consequences.

A Focus on Paper Packaging and Textiles

The project is focused on creating sustainable coatings that combine two key properties: super hydrophobicity (extreme water repellence) and oleophobicity (resistance to oils). These characteristics are essential for many everyday applications, particularly in paper-based packaging and textiles, which are among the most significant sources of PFAS pollution.

Bio-Based Innovation for Circular Design

To meet this challenge, the BIOSUPHYOL team is building a solution that is more than 80% biobased. Instead of relying on harmful synthetic chemicals, the coatings will be made from naturally derived materials such as:

  • fatty acids
  • hydrophobic proteins
  • cellulose microfibers.

These carefully combined components make it possible to achieve the necessary microscale surface roughness. This combination ensures not only performance but also compatibility with circular design principles.

Built to Last: Added Durability Without Toxicity

For products that require additional durability—such as resistance to abrasion, washing, or chemical wear—the coatings will be enhanced with a cross-linking step. This added process boosts mechanical strength and longevity, ensuring the bio-based coatings perform reliably in demanding conditions without compromising safety or sustainability.

Enabling a More Circular Economy

The impact of BIOSUPHYOL goes far beyond technical innovation. By eliminating PFAS from key applications and replacing them with non-toxic, recyclable alternatives, the project contributes directly to more circular production models.

These new coatings are designed to be more easily:

  • recycled
  • reused
  • safely disposed of

This aligns with stricter environmental regulations and growing consumer expectations.

Supporting SMEs in Sustainable R&D

One of the project’s greatest strengths lies in its support for research and development among SMEs. For many businesses, especially smaller ones, making the shift to safer alternatives can feel overwhelming. BIOSUPHYOL offers a way forward: a practical, scalable innovation that helps companies meet both their performance goals and their sustainability commitments.

A Vision for Greener Materials

The project also reflects a broader movement toward cleaner, greener materials that can support the circular economy. By reducing dependency on persistent and hazardous substances like PFAS, BIOSUPHYOL is helping lay the groundwork for a future where safety, functionality, and sustainability go hand in hand.

For companies in the packaging, textile, or surface treatment industries, BIOSUPHYOL opens the door to new opportunities. Whether it’s designing next-generation food packaging, creating performance textiles, or meeting the latest regulatory standards, the project offers a real-world solution to a growing problem. And because the technology is adaptable, its potential reaches far beyond the initial applications, offering promising use cases across other sectors.

Innovation, performance and sustainability: a winning choice

In a time where environmental responsibility is no longer optional, BIOSUPHYOL demonstrates how smart R&D investments can lead to safer products, stronger brands, and a more sustainable future. It is a clear example of how innovation can serve both business and the planet.

With BIOSUPHYOL, businesses don't have to choose between performance and sustainability. They can achieve both and help drive the circular transition forward, one product at a time.
